Event Management Lessons from India

Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal

In my last post, I spoke of the chaos that enveloped me while in India.  I could write for days about what I observed there and even though it’s been over a month since my last journey, I am reminded of the experiences almost daily.   Like the amazing and powerful OZ, travel has a way of hitting you over the head with new ways of looking at the world and at the same time, we might discover a new-found appreciation for what we oftentimes take for granted.

Events, meetings and other experiences we create for our clients carry the same opportunities.  We have a period of time in which to deliver an experience to the guests with the hope that when they journey back to their day-to-day, they are filled with new ideas, inspirations and thoughts that enrich their lives and contributions to their communities.

En route home from India, I scribbled the following “Lessons from India” on the back of my boarding pass:

  • Please don’t take for granted your independence.
  • You can slow down and speed up at the same time – I witnessed it every day on the highway.
  • Look for order in the chaos. [tweet this]
  • Give in.
  • Look people in the eye whenever possible.
  • Appreciate what you have, BE GRATEFUL.
  • Sleep is precious.
  • Delhi Belly is not pleasant yet inevitable.
  • Slow Down.
  • Breathe.
  • Fresh air and clean water are precious – take good care of what’s left for our children and their children.
  • I cherish and am grateful for my family, friends and Wilsonwest colleagues.
  • Indian weddings are beyond anything I have seen in the event world.
  • Girls and women do not share equal rights in so much of the world, India included and we must do whatever we can to break this cycle.

NAMASTE,

Cindy Wilson
